Tonny and Faith Muwanguzi just celebrated their 6th anniversary. They shared a dream when they wed—Asobola. Translated from Luganda it means “He is able.” This is the name of their NGO, non-government organization, that allows them to house and care for the orphans they have.

The couple has three kids of their own—two girls, Mercy and Glory, and a young son, David.

Before they had kids, they had kids, lots of them. Thankfully, Tonny works on commission, so if he must respond to an illness or incident at home, he can.

Uganda is not unique where crime is concerned. The country has its share of people like Tonny and Faith, but it also has maybe more than its share of undesirables. Police, military, and government employees are on the take, some openly. That makes doing business more expensive. Those in power are no respecter of the poor either.

Tonny was not long out of the hospital when we met—thrashed and left for dead one evening for his cell phone. He still suffers from the head trauma sustained in the beating. The couple are not immune from the same maladies the kids suffer from. Malaria and Typhoid are no respecter of persons either.

Through it all, they manage to house, feed, and care for the children under their roof. Cooking on charcoal, (now electric with charcoal backup,) Faith prepares meals. Their number has dwindled to 34 kids the past two years, but that’s still quite a chore. Beans and corn maize is the normal. Meat and fruit when times are good.

Faith educates the kids the best she can. Their ages vary so much, it hard to cater to one group, and her resources are limited.

Everyone works. Too many and too much for two people to do. The kids clean and wash their clothes and help with any and all chores, and that is a good lesson in itself.
